Early Warning Indicators and Intervention Systems
On Track for Success: Early Warning Indicator Systems
In America today, one in four children fails to graduate from high school on time. Now, early warning indicator and intervention systems (EWS) can help change that. The recently released report On Track for Success: The Use of Early Warning Indicator and Intervention Systems to Build a Grad Nation is the most up-to-date and comprehensive view on these cutting-edge systems, informed by site visits and interviews with educators in sixteen districts and seven states. Recently, the Alliance for Excellent Education, Civic Enterprises, the Everyone Graduates Center, and the Data Quality Campaign held a webinar on November 9. Guest speakers included Bob Wise, president of the Alliance for Excellent Education; Mary Bruce, education policy analyst for Civic Enterprises, Bob Balfanz, codirector of the Everyone Graduates Center at Johns Hopkins University; Lyndsay Pinkus, director of national and federal policy initiatives at the Data Quality Campaign, and Kathleen Barfield, executive vice president/CIO of collaborative R&D at Edvance Research.

Leveraging the Power of SLDS: Building Capacity to Turn Data into Useful Information 
Recently Edvance Research participated in a Data Quality Campaign webinar on June 29, 2011. A discussion was held with Neal Gibson, the data system project manager for the Arkansas Education Department, and Kathleen Barfield, the Chief Administrative Officer for San Antonio, Texas-based Edvance Research, Inc.  Other panelists included Rebecca Shah, Data Quality Campaign Senior Associate and Nancy Smith, Consultant with DataSmithSolutions.

Get it Now: Ready to Use Afterschool Activities and Planning Tools
Presented at the 2011 BOOST Conference. Participants experienced a highly-engaging activity and walked away with the tools for planning one! They learned how to use these planning tools for creating rich learning experiences for students and adults and for providing “on-time” instructional training for their staff.  After the session, participants were encouraged to go online and explore the Texas ACE (Afterschool Centers on Education) Activity Collection where they could download activities and lessons that support academics, enrichment, parental engagement, and college and career readiness.

Epic Learning and Collaboration: Bridging Community Expertise and Professional Development via an Online Portal for High-Quality Afterschool Programming
Edvance Research presented at the 2010 National 21st Century Community Learning Centers Conference. This presentation explored a multi-dimensional framework that uses an online portal and collaboration tools for creating a community of practitioners and contributors and providing professional development for Texas 21st CCLC grantees. Edvance Research explained replicable strategies that included podcasting and on-demand learning that bridged expertise with afterschool best practices.

This interactive session was presented at the Youth Development Initiative (YDI) 2010 Statewide Youth Professional Conference. It explored intentional programming tools used for creating high-quality afterschool programming that are focused and engaging for students across all grade levels and their families.

Bullying
 
Bullying: What Characteristics are Associated with Increased Reporting?
On October 21, 2011, Dr. Jenifer Hartman and Dr. Lauren Decker presented the findings of the REL Northeast and Islands “Bullying” study to a group of approximately fifty participants on the New Mexico State University campus at the BRAVE: Bullying Responses And Visions for Equity Workshop. The presentation also included a “Research to Practice” section highlighting the work of John Linney, Executive Director, Impact Coaching and Speaking, Inc., El Paso, TX. The participants were assembled for a 2-day meeting focusing specifically on bullying and bullying prevention. Attendees included counselors, law enforcement officers, principals, teachers, superintendents, social workers, a physical education teacher and members of a positive behavior support team.  Almost all represented small districts and/or towns in New Mexico.

REL Southwest convened representatives of the Louisiana Department of Education and education individuals from school districts and organizations on October 24, 2011 and focused on the use of on-track indicators to improve graduation rates in the state of Louisiana.

This presentation provides a brief background on a study of four national English language arts standards to see how closely the standards agree on what students should know in English language arts in preparation for college. It also highlights information from a study conducted with Texas students in comparing how closely two national standards sets -- the ACT and the American Diploma Project (ADP) English language arts and reading college readiness standards  -- align with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills English Language arts and reading (TEKS ELAR) standards for grades 9-12.

Middle School Matters Project
On September 27, 2011, Former First Lady Laura Bush spoke with Ann Curry of the Today Show about the Bush Institute and the Middle School Matters Project.  The video continued after the Today Show from Education Nation with Mrs. Bush discussing The Middle School Matters Project at the 3:50 – 7:20 time on the video.  Edvance Research will be providing overall project management for the initial phase of the project.
